Alone in the Desert ,Until I Wasn’t

My recent trip to New Mexico, beyond its striking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, gave me a quiet sense of perspective.

At White Sands National Park, I wandered until the world fell away, equipped with water, my phone, and a clear sense of the daylight I had left. Soon, the only sounds were my breathing and the occasional thud of my heartbeat. For a moment, it felt like standing on the moon, vast, untethered, and impossibly quiet.

Dusk arrived faster than I expected. I had left the marked trail intentionally to explore, but I stayed mindful of my path. As the light softened into violets and greys, I slowed my pace, using both my phone and the shapes of the dunes to guide me. The footprints behind me were my only companions, repeating in soft, familiar curves. From the top of one dune, the world felt endless open; between them, it felt enclosed. I walked carefully, alert, listening to my thoughts grow louder in the silence.

As I walked, a fleeting thought crossed my mind: wouldn’t it be helpful if this place had a beam of light shooting into the sky, like a desert lighthouse, to guide explorers back to the trailhead? Still, even without it, I stayed calm, trusting my own awareness to carry me through.

Relief came when I noticed footprints that weren’t mine. They didn’t direct me exactly, but they reminded me I was not alone and connection, even unseen, existed. When I finally reached the parking lot four hours later, the area was empty with only my car left in sight. I sat in my car for quite a while, letting the stillness settle. I realized that traveling alone had never been truly about isolation, but about recognizing how much connection matters, and feeling gratitude for it.

I had gone out seeking solitude, but I returned with a deeper appreciation for the threads that pull us back. Now, standing at a busy city crosswalk, the noise doesn’t feel like a distraction, it feels like a safety net.
