I recently watched Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Without spoiling anything, if you’ve seen MI:7, you probably expected “The Entity”, a powerful AI, to continue playing a major role in the story. That narrative got me thinking about how artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved, how it’s shaping our daily lives, and where it might be heading.
One of the most common questions people ask is, “What is AI, really?” At its core, short for artificial intelligence, refers to machines mimicking human cognitive processes. A key trait of human intelligence is the ability to reason and deduce. What makes AI so powerful isn’t just that it can process huge amounts of information, it’s that it can spot patterns, draw conclusions, and even generate new hypotheses that humans might overlook.
Right now, most AI tools are used to search for and synthesize information, like supercharged versions of Google. That’s useful, but it only scratches the surface of what AI can do. The true promise of AI lies in using that information intelligently, to reason through complex problems, suggest original ideas, and explore uncharted territory. Of course, humans are still needed to design experiments, interpret results, and make judgments, but AI can dramatically accelerate that process.
There’s actually a great historical parallel: Dmitri Mendeleev and the periodic table. He didn’t just organize the elements, he used logical reasoning to predict the existence of elements that hadn’t been discovered yet. That’s similar to what AI is doing today: using structured knowledge and patterns to anticipate what’s possible before we see it ourselves.
In that sense, AI isn’t entirely new, it’s just the scientific method turned into code. What we call the “rapid rise” of AI is really us learning how to take our existing knowledge and make it programmable. Once you connect that to the internet and feed it real-world data, AI becomes an incredibly powerful tool for applying human ideas at massive scale.
So, how will AI evolve from here?
There are two major bottlenecks:
- Scientific Progress: AI depends on theories, methods, and models created by human researchers. If science slows down, so does AI, because it has fewer new ideas to build on.
- Data Availability: AI also needs real-world inputs, observations, measurements, and examples. Without new data, even the best algorithms can’t improve or produce meaningful insights.
In short, AI can only work with what we give it, ideas and data. It can’t invent truth out of thin air. Its potential depends directly on how far we, as humans, continue to push the boundaries of discovery.
A Possible Analogy: AI as a Chef
Imagine AI as a chef.
- The algorithm is the chef’s skillset.
- The data is the ingredients.
- The output, AI’s insight or creation, is the meal.
No matter how talented the chef is, they can only cook with what’s in the kitchen. Better ingredients (data) and better cooking techniques (scientific methods) lead to better meals (results). But without new recipes or new ingredients, the chef can’t create anything groundbreaking.
So… Will AI Turn Against Us?
That’s the question Mission: Impossible raises: could AI become so powerful that it turns on its creators?
Here’s the thing: AI doesn’t “get smarter” on its own. Its intelligence is a reflection of our intelligence. It doesn’t think independently; it thinks in the way we’ve programmed it to. So in a sense, AI can’t outsmart humanity, because it is humanity, just expressed in code.
The real risk isn’t that AI becomes sentient, it’s that we use it irresponsibly. Just like modifying the genes of a cow could lead to dangerous milk, reckless use of AI (especially in warfare, surveillance, or misinformation) could lead to harm. It’s not about AI becoming evil, it’s about what humans choose to build and deploy.
The good news? We’re still in control. The direction AI takes is entirely up to us. The challenge is whether we choose to guide it with wisdom, ethics, and care, or just let it evolve without a clear sense of responsibility.
