Lately, I’ve noticed I’ve been waking up about an hour earlier than usual. I still feel rested, so it doesn’t seem like I’m not getting enough sleep. But the change got me curious, and I started trying to figure out why.
At first, I thought maybe I was just busier or more active, but that wasn’t really true. I also considered the warmer weather, but the early wakeups didn’t happen every day, so that didn’t seem to be it either. Then I started thinking about food.
Nothing had changed much, except I’ve been making a lot more smoothies lately. I’ve had smoothies before though, so that didn’t seem like the reason. But this time, I’ve been adding a lot of cherries, one of my favorite fruits.
That made me wonder: could it be the cherries?
A quick Google search confirmed that cherries, especially tart cherries, contain melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate our sleep-wake cycles. That would explain why I’ve been waking up earlier and still feeling well-rested. It wasn’t about getting less sleep, it was about getting better sleep.
This was actually the first time I experienced such a clear and immediate link between something I ate and how I felt. I’ve written before about how diet impacts health, but most benefits feel long-term or hard to measure. This one was pretty direct and surprising.
To test the theory, I stopped eating cherries for a few days. Sure enough, my sleep gradually shifted back to its usual pattern, though not completely. It felt like my body had already adjusted a bit to the new rhythm. That just reinforced the idea that even small changes, like eating cherries, can quietly influence our internal clock.
I also experimented with timing and found that having cherries a couple hours before bed worked best, probably because it gives the melatonin time to kick in.
On a side note, I tried kefir and Greek yogurt around bedtime too. Kefir seemed to work slightly better for me, not just in texture, but in helping me wind down. Its probiotics and tryptophan may have played a role.
So if you’re looking for a natural way to sleep better, maybe try adding some cherries to your evening snack. Hope it works for you too.
